As you know, back in February, Microsoft announced the end of Xbox Live on the original Xbox and thus the end of Halo 2 multiplayer.  Since the deadline passed, several dedicated nerds have been leaving their Xboxes on and have continued playing. Microsoft bought some out with Halo: Reach betas, but some have stayed strong.

Eventually Microsoft was forced to boot the last two players as can be seen in this Bungie forum.

The last player, Apache, among other things, had this to say about his final Halo moments of aimlessly running around:

It would almost be romantic, if it wasn’t so fiercely geeky. After all, what’s wrong with Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, or Halo Wars (kidding about that last one)? The real question is how these guys managed to keep their Xboxes working for so long. Last time I put the ol’ Halo 2 in my original Xbox, it literally exploded, taking my right arm with it.

What do you guys think? Are these people stubborn proponents of a lost era, or are they hopeless romantics for “retro” gaming?
